Tanzania visa planning without relying on an airline summary

A step-by-step route through Tanzania's official visa categories, referral cases, documents and approval check.

Verified Aug 2026

A Tanzania visa decision begins before the application form. First establish whether your passport is exempt, eligible for a visa on arrival or placed in the referral category. Only then choose the application route.

Tanzania Immigration Services recommends its online platform and warns applicants to use the government site rather than another link. Its guidelines also distinguish ordinary tourism applications from United States passport applications and referral cases. That classification affects timing, documents and whether buying a flight before approval is sensible.

Step 1: classify the passport

Open the official guidelines and check three lists: nationalities exempt from a visa, nationalities eligible for online or on-arrival service, and referral cases that need advance approval.

Do not infer the answer from residence. A Nigerian citizen living in France is assessed on the Nigerian travel document. A French resident travelling on another passport follows that passport's rule.

The referral list deserves special attention. Tanzania says people in that category, as well as stateless people and people with refugee status, cannot use the on-arrival route without prior approval from the Commissioner General of Immigration. The list can change, so read it on the day you prepare the trip.

If the passport is exempt, continue to the document and purpose checks. Exemption from a tourist visa does not remove the conditions attached to the visit.

Step 2: match the category to the purpose

The official guidance assigns most tourists who need a visa to the ordinary single-entry category. It places United States passport holders visiting for tourism in the multiple-entry category, even when the planned holiday has only one entry.

A tourism visa is not a substitute for business, employment, research, study or volunteering permission. Describe the purpose accurately. Choosing a cheaper or simpler category can lead to rejection or problems at the border.

On 12 August 2026, the published fee was US$50 for an ordinary visa and US$100 for the multiple visa used by US tourists. The ordinary category was listed for up to 90 days. These are dated figures. Confirm them in the live fee table before paying.

Step 3: decide between online and arrival

Tanzania lists online application and visa on arrival as two routes for eligible travellers, while recommending online application. The arrival option is not available to referral cases without approval.

Online approval can reduce uncertainty before a flight, but it still does not guarantee admission. Tanzania describes a visa as authority to travel and present yourself for entry clearance. The immigration officer at the border makes the admission decision.

If you choose arrival, check that the airline accepts the same official rule for your passport. Carry a payment method that works at the entry point and allow time in the arrival plan. Do not assume a route available at a major international airport works identically at every land border.

Step 4: prepare the application file

The official guideline requires a passport valid for at least six months and at least one unused visa page. It also lists a return ticket, passport biographical page, photograph, completed declaration and the relevant fee among ordinary application materials.

Prepare clean files before opening the form. Use names that identify the document, such as passport-name.jpg and return-flight.pdf. Check image size and format against the current portal instructions.

Each traveller needs an application, including a child entered in a parent's passport paperwork. Family members should not assume that one approval covers the booking.

Referral applicants are told not to pay for flights or accommodation before approval. The portal allows an itinerary to be uploaded instead of a flight ticket in that situation. Tanzania recommends applying at least two months before travel for referral cases.

Step 5: enter the route accurately

The form asks for a first destination. If the trip covers both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, the immigration guideline says to select the first destination. The same Tanzania visa can cover both; a second visa is not required merely because the trip crosses between the mainland and Zanzibar.

Dates should match the travel plan. The official page warns that a submitted application cannot simply be edited. Contact immigration if a flight change creates a mismatch after submission.

Use an email account you can access while travelling. Application updates and the grant notice go there. Record the application identification number separately because it is used to track status.

Step 6: pay only inside the official process

The Tanzania portal lists Visa and Mastercard for online payment. Confirm the amount against the selected category before authorising it. A tourism application for a US passport and an ordinary tourism application for many other passports do not carry the same published fee.

Do not pay a search-result website simply because its page looks official. The government guideline explicitly tells applicants to use immigration.go.tz. Check the ending of the domain rather than trusting the crest or colours on the page.

Keep the payment confirmation and application number. A card charge alone is not a visa grant notice.

Step 7: wait for the grant notice

The official guideline states a processing period of ten days except for referral cases. Treat that as published guidance rather than a guarantee. Apply with enough margin to correct a missing attachment or payment issue.

Track the application through the government status page. Do not start the journey merely because payment succeeded. Tanzania tells applicants to wait for the approval notification or visa grant notice.

Read the notice when it arrives. Compare the name, passport number, category and dates with the passport and itinerary. Contact immigration about a mismatch rather than altering the document.

Step 8: assemble the border file

Carry the passport used in the application, the grant notice, return or onward ticket and accommodation details. Keep digital copies offline and a paper copy where practical.

A health certificate may be required depending on the journey. Check Tanzania's current health requirements and the transit history close to departure. Visa approval does not settle a separate public-health rule.

If the route leaves Tanzania and returns, read the entry conditions carefully. The guidelines say an ordinary visa holder who visits another East African country may return on the same visa while it remains valid. Confirm that this still applies to your dates and route before relying on it.

The final check

Three facts should agree before departure: the passport classification, visa category and route. If one changes, repeat the official check. A new passport, added border crossing or change from tourism to work can alter the answer.

The government portal is not merely where the form lives. It is the current source for the category, fee, referral status and approval record. Keep it at the centre of the plan.
