The great migration is a continuous movement through a large ecosystem. It does not arrive for a booking on a fixed date. Rain, grazing and river conditions affect where herds move and how long they remain.
Tanzania National Parks publishes broad guidance for Serengeti seasons. Use it to select a range and sector, then build a trip that remains worthwhile if the animals move earlier or later.
Define the event you mean
Write the actual interest:
- calving and young animals
- large herds on open plains
- river crossings
- predator activity
- broad wildlife viewing without one required event
"See the migration" is too vague for a camp decision. Different phases occur in different parts of the ecosystem.
Choose a geographic sector
Record the camp coordinates and park sector. Northern, central, western and southern Serengeti are not interchangeable. The Masai Mara and Mara Triangle sit across an international border in Kenya.
Ask how long the camp transfer takes from the arrival airstrip or gate. A camp described as mobile may change location by season, so confirm where it will be for the booked dates.
Do not select a country first and assume the herds follow the booking.
Use a date range
Enter an earliest and latest acceptable date rather than one predicted day. Compare the authority's broad seasonal guidance with the camp's operating location.
- preferred range: __________
- alternative range: __________
- sector: __________
- minimum full days: __________
A longer stay improves opportunity but still does not guarantee a crossing or hunt.
Audit the promise
Copy the operator's exact claim. Circle words such as "guaranteed," "always" or a precise crossing date.
Ask what evidence supports the camp location and what the plan becomes if herds are elsewhere. A responsible answer should discuss ranges and resident wildlife.
Do not pay a premium solely for a promise no operator controls.
Build a trip without the event
List the habitats, resident species, guiding style and other activities available in the selected area. The trip should retain value when no river crossing occurs.
Ask about vehicle conduct at crowded sightings. More cars moving into position do not make wildlife behaviour more predictable.
Choose enough nights to experience the area rather than commuting long distances in search of one photograph.
Add the international border correctly
The Serengeti and Mara ecosystem crosses Tanzania and Kenya, but tourist vehicles and entry permissions do not move as wildlife does.
A combined trip needs separate immigration checks, park fees and a planned border or flight handoff. The East Africa Tourist Visa does not include Tanzania.
Do not add both countries merely as insurance against animal movement. It can consume the days intended for viewing.
Price the range honestly
Record accommodation, park or conservancy fees, vehicle, flights and transfers for the same dates. Seasonal tariff changes can be material.
Mark every estimate with currency and quote date. Ask what happens if an authority changes a fee before arrival.
Compare a fixed seasonal camp with a mobile camp on included services and actual location, not the adjective in the name.
Set a publication-day check
Before final payment and again before departure, confirm the camp location, operating airstrip, park tariff and transfer.
Do not rewrite the itinerary around social-media sightings from one day. Those reports describe where some animals were, not where they will be on the booking date.
Keep the plan flexible inside the selected sector and follow the guide's current assessment.
The completed worksheet
A defensible migration plan has an event definition, sector, date range, minimum stay, fallback value and dated sources. It has no guaranteed wildlife behaviour.
The calendar narrows the search. It does not issue an appointment to the herds.
Ask who produced every movement update used in the sales process and when it was observed. A guide on the ground, a camp marketing account and an old map do not carry the same weight. Treat a current observation as descriptive, not predictive.
Confirm whether the selected camp is permanent, seasonal or mobile. A mobile operation still has planned sites and operating dates; it does not follow animals day by day. Request the booked coordinates or named area, airstrip and transfer arrangement.
Build the daily driving radius with the operator. Repeated long drives toward another sector can reduce rest and increase vehicle pressure around sightings. If the preferred event moves outside a reasonable range, use the area originally booked rather than turning every day into a chase. The fallback is part of the product and should be discussed before deposit. Carry the agreed camp and airstrip map offline during the complete trip, with its issue date recorded.
