Editorial standards
Independence, sourcing, provenance labels, and the line between editorial judgement and commercial interest.
Last updated
These are the rules the desk works to. They are published so you can hold us to them.
Independence
No commercial relationship buys coverage, placement, a ranking or a rating. Where a cheaper or better option earns us nothing, we still recommend it, and we say that we earn nothing from it. A local SIM that beats an eSIM gets recommended even though the eSIM pays us.
Provenance labels
Accommodation and activity entries carry one of four labels, so the basis of a recommendation is always visible:
- Editorial research. Assessed from published rates, location, transfer times and verifiable detail. We have not stayed there.
- First-hand. A member of the desk stayed or took part, and the page says when.
- Reader reports. Drawn from reader correspondence, described as such and never presented as our own experience.
- Platform data. Aggregated from booking platforms, with the platform named.
Corrections
When we get something wrong we correct the page, note what changed, and date the correction. We do not quietly edit a figure and leave the page looking as though it was always right.
No invented experience
We do not write in the voice of someone who has been somewhere they have not been. This is the single rule most easily broken in travel writing, and the one that most quickly makes a publication worthless.
Sponsored content
Sponsored work is labelled at the top of the page and in the byline area, never only in a footer. It is written to the same factual standard, and a sponsor cannot approve editorial copy. See the sponsored content policy.
Artificial intelligence
See our policy on AI. In short: no published article is machine-generated, and no figure enters the site from a language model.
Questions or corrections
Write to desk@wander.africa. We answer corrections first and fastest: if a figure on this site is wrong, telling us is the most useful thing you can do.
