Choose a Zanzibar coast before comparing hotels. Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi and Stone Town create different tide, transfer and activity patterns.
The property still needs an exact check. Two hotels using the same coast name can have different beach access and distance from the nearest town.
Airport and Stone Town access
Stone Town suits travellers who want heritage, markets and an arrival or departure night near the urban side of the island. UNESCO recognises it as a living Swahili trading town, not a beach resort.
A coast stay requires a road transfer. Ask the property for the current estimate at the flight time and the official driver arrangement.
Split the stay only when Stone Town has its own purpose or protects a flight. Moving for one short evening can add more luggage work than value.
Nungwi and Kendwa
The northern and north-western choices are often considered when travellers want beach access less dramatically altered by low tide than some eastern locations. The exact frontage still matters.
Ask for current beach photographs across tide states, swimming access, boat departure points and noise from neighbouring venues.
Confirm whether restaurants and activities are walkable from the actual entrance. A coast label can cover several kilometres.
Paje and the south-east
Paje is strongly associated with wind sports and a broad tide cycle. That can suit a traveller choosing a qualified school and frustrate someone expecting all-day deep-water swimming outside the hotel.
Ask the provider about season, equipment, instruction, rescue arrangements and cancellation conditions. The hotel cannot guarantee wind.
Check road transfer, nearby construction and the room's wind or noise exposure.
Jambiani
Jambiani can suit a slower village-edge stay when the traveller understands tide-dependent water access. Respect working beaches, fishing activity and residents' privacy.
Ask where the property ends and public or working space begins. Do not treat a village as resort scenery.
Confirm meal options, transport after dark and the location of any booked boat activity.
Michamvi and peninsula stays
Michamvi properties can offer a more contained stay, depending on the exact side of the peninsula. Transfer and restaurant access deserve careful checking.
Ask which direction the beach faces, how tide affects it and whether a hotel shuttle is required for activities.
A remote setting is useful only when the property operating model matches the trip. Add meals and transport to the price comparison.
Stone Town as a full base
Stone Town works for a short cultural visit, work trip or connection. It is not a substitute for every beach objective.
Verify building access, stairs, air conditioning and vehicle drop-off at historic properties. Lanes can require a luggage handoff.
Use official heritage and museum information for visits. Follow local guidance on dress and photography.
Tide and weather comparison
Ask each shortlisted property for the tide source used for its beach and the location of safe swimming under current conditions.
Use the Tanzania Meteorological Authority for weather information. A hotel forecast screenshot is not an operating guarantee for a boat.
Keep one flexible day and do not put a sea transfer directly before the international flight.
Compare the total stay
Use the same meal basis, room type and cancellation conditions. Add airport transfers, activity transfers, compulsory meals and local taxes.
Request accessibility details from road to room and room to beach. Sand, stairs and long grounds can change the answer.
Choose Nungwi or Kendwa for their specific beach and access fit, Paje for a wind-sport-led plan, Jambiani for its particular village and coast pattern, Michamvi for a property-led retreat, or Stone Town for heritage and connections. No coast wins every trip.
Before deposit, confirm the room, bed, occupancy, meal plan, local tax, transfer and remaining balance. Ask whether the payment recipient is the property or a platform. Keep the cancellation deadline in the destination's local time.
Check recent images for erosion, building work and beach access, then ask the property about the booked dates. A review can identify a question but cannot guarantee current conditions.
Every stay recommendation needs provenance. This comparison uses official destination, heritage and weather sources plus property-level questions. It does not claim an inspection or anonymous stay. A future listing should state first-hand, editorial research, reader report or platform data rather than implying experience.
Repeat the coast, transfer and tide questions before the free-cancellation deadline. If the answers differ materially from the listing, request a written correction or cancel under the applicable terms. Keep all claims tied to the exact property and travel dates rather than extending them to an entire village. Save the property's reply.
