South Africa eVisa and visitor visa: start with your passport
A passport-first route through South Africa's exemption list, visitor visa process and electronic application portal.
South Africa does not have one visitor process for every nationality. The Department of Home Affairs maintains an exemption list, a visitor visa process and an electronic application portal. Start with the passport, then choose the channel.
Home Affairs warns that exemption terms can change without notice. It also makes a distinction often lost in travel summaries: a visa allows a traveller to reach a port of entry, where an immigration officer decides whether to admit the person and for how long.
Branch one: your passport is exempt
Open the current Home Affairs exemption list and find the exact country and passport type. Some entries distinguish ordinary passports from diplomatic or official documents. Some exemptions specify a maximum stay.
Record the allowed period instead of remembering only "visa-free." A 30-day and a 90-day exemption are different planning tools. The period granted at entry is the one that controls the visit.
Visa exemption does not remove the document checks. Home Affairs lists a valid passport or travel document, a blank page, sufficient funds, a return or onward ticket and a yellow fever certificate when the journey starts in or passes through a relevant area among entry requirements.
Branch two: you need a visitor visa
Home Affairs says short visitor visas cover international travellers who live outside South Africa and intend a temporary tourism or business visit of 90 days or less. Requirements differ by country, and the department directs applicants to the nearest South African mission or consulate for the applicable process.
The department's general list includes a passport valid for at least 30 days beyond the intended visit, at least one unused page, the application form, the prescribed fee, evidence of purpose and duration, photographs and a return or onward ticket for air travel. It may also require financial evidence and health documentation.
Use the mission responsible for your place of residence. Do not assume a document list copied from another country's South African mission is identical.
Branch three: the eVisa portal accepts your case
The Department of Home Affairs links to its eVisa application service from the immigration pages. Electronic availability depends on nationality and visa type. Open the live portal and test your passport rather than treating "South Africa has an eVisa" as a universal rule.
An electronic channel changes how the application is submitted. It does not change the underlying purpose of the visa or guarantee admission. The application still needs accurate passport details and supporting evidence.
Check that the address ends in dha.gov.za before uploading documents. Save the reference and payment confirmation. An agency that accepts every passport is not evidence that Home Affairs accepts every passport through the electronic channel.
The port-of-entry distinction
Home Affairs states that visas are not issued at South African ports of entry. A traveller who requires one can be refused boarding by an airline and returned if they arrive without it.
This differs from countries that broadly issue tourist visas on arrival. Do not carry a neighbouring country's process into South Africa. If the passport is not exempt, finish the relevant application before travel.
The visa, once issued, is reviewed again at the border. The officer sets the visit conditions. Check the entry stamp and date before leaving the immigration area.
Passport validity and blank pages
For a visitor visa application, Home Affairs publishes a passport-validity requirement of at least 30 days after the end of the intended visit and at least one unused page. Airlines and transit countries can impose additional practical constraints.
A passport renewed after visa issuance creates a document mismatch. Ask the issuing mission how to proceed rather than carrying an unlinked old and new passport on assumption.
Damage, missing pages or a name difference between the booking and passport should be resolved before the application. The most detailed itinerary cannot compensate for a travel document an airline will not accept.
Children and consent documents
Home Affairs lists additional documents for children travelling or joining parents, including birth, guardianship, custody or consent evidence depending on the circumstances. Requirements can also arise from the child's departure country and airline.
Check the whole route. A family connecting through another state may meet that state's transit or child-travel rules even when South Africa is the destination.
Each child's visa or exemption status follows the child's passport. Do not assume a parent's status extends to the child.
Yellow fever checks depend on the route
South Africa's entry guidance refers to a yellow fever certificate when a journey starts in or passes through the yellow fever belt of Africa or South America. The route can therefore matter as much as the origin printed on the ticket.
Health rules can change during outbreaks. Check current guidance with South African authorities and a qualified travel-health service. This article reports the immigration document rule and does not replace medical advice.
A long airside connection and an entered stopover may be treated differently. Confirm the current transit wording for the specific itinerary.
Build the application around the stated purpose
Tourism, a business visit, study and work are not interchangeable. Home Affairs warns that entry may be refused when the purpose is stated incorrectly. A short stay does not automatically make an activity tourism.
If you plan paid work, production, research, volunteering or study, identify the correct category before booking. Do not ask a visitor visa to carry an activity it excludes.
Keep invitations, accommodation details and onward evidence consistent with the purpose declared. Contradictory documents invite questions even when each document is genuine.
Recheck at three points
Check the official exemption list before buying a restrictive fare, the application channel before submitting, and the entry requirements shortly before departure. Save dated copies of approvals and contact correspondence.
The eVisa portal is one branch of the system, not the system itself. The reliable path is passport, exemption result, correct category, official channel and border file, in that order.
