Mahé, Praslin or La Digue as a first base
A first-base manual for matching Mahé, Praslin or La Digue to the international flight, ferry tolerance and intended protected-area visits.
Mahé, Praslin and La Digue are connected but not interchangeable bases. Mahé holds the international gateway, Praslin has its own airport and ferry links, and La Digue depends on sea access.
Choose the first base around arrival recovery and the trip's main activity. Add another island only after the connection and final-flight buffer work.
Begin with Mahé
Mahé is the default arrival point for international flights. One night there can protect a later domestic flight or ferry after a late arrival.
A full Mahé stay can include beaches, city time, trails and protected areas. Check Seychelles National Parks and Gardens Authority for current access, fees and closures.
Ask the property for the airport transfer, exact coast and transport options. The island name alone does not establish a short journey.
Move to Praslin deliberately
Praslin can be reached by domestic air or inter-island ferry. Compare the complete chain from the Mahé hotel or airport to the Praslin property.
A short flight has check-in and baggage rules. A ferry has port transfers, sea conditions and a sailing schedule. Use the operating carrier's current information.
Choose Praslin when its beaches, protected areas or onward La Digue link are central, not merely to add another island name.
Treat La Digue as sea-dependent
La Digue has no international airport and relies on ferry access. Confirm the exact operator, connection through Praslin where applicable, baggage and final sailing.
Ask the accommodation how guests and luggage reach the property from the jetty. Bicycle-led movement may not suit every traveller or every bag.
A day trip and an overnight stay create different experiences and risks. An overnight adds another check-in but reduces pressure to catch the same-day return.
Decide by sea tolerance
Fast ferries can be uncomfortable in rough conditions. A traveller prone to motion sickness should seek appropriate medical advice and compare domestic-air options where available.
Do not treat a forecast as an operating decision. The captain and ferry company decide whether a service runs.
Read change and cancellation rules before booking non-refundable accommodation on the next island.
Protect the flight home
Return to Mahé with enough margin before the international departure. The required buffer depends on ticket protection, frequency and cost of missing the flight.
If the domestic connection and international flight sit on separate tickets, consider a final Mahé night. Confirm whether bags are checked through.
Do not rely on the final ferry of the day to meet a long-haul check-in without a documented margin.
Check protected-area plans
Use the Seychelles National Parks and Gardens Authority for official sites, rules and fees. A beach or trail inside a protected area may have different access from a public road.
Follow wildlife, waste and trail guidance. Do not feed animals, remove natural material or leave marked routes where prohibited.
A licensed guide can add interpretation, but ask for credentials, group size and cancellation terms.
Compare accommodation operating models
A self-catering property, guesthouse and resort include different services. Add meals, transfers, cleaning and local transport to the rate.
Request room access, steps, bathroom layout, air conditioning and backup arrangements. On La Digue, include the jetty-to-property handoff.
Keep recommendation provenance explicit. This comparison is editorial research, not a first-hand hotel review.
Build one-island and two-island versions
One-island version should include day trips only when the return schedule is reliable. Two-island version needs transport, luggage and buffer costs.
Use equal dates, room basis and cancellation terms. A cheaper island room can be offset by ferry and transfer charges.
If the trip is under a week, remove an island before reducing every stay to one or two nights.
First-base decisions
Start on Mahé after a late long-haul arrival or when its own activities dominate. Start on Praslin only when a protected connection gets there with a safe margin. Reach La Digue after the sea transfer is confirmed and the stay justifies the additional handoff.
Keep current operator contacts and tickets offline. Recheck service before leaving each property.
The right base is the island where the trip can begin without immediately racing to leave it.
Before payment, confirm the accommodation's legal name, transfer, taxes, room basis and final balance. On a ferry-dependent island, ask what happens when the last sailing is cancelled and whether the property moves the booking.
Travellers needing mobility assistance should check ferry boarding, jetty surfaces, luggage support and the route to the room with both carrier and property. An accessible room does not make every transfer step accessible.
Keep carrier and hotel messages separate. A ferry cancellation does not automatically create a hotel refund, and a hotel amendment does not change the ferry ticket. Travel insurance may have its own definitions and evidence requirements. Read them before relying on reimbursement.
