Rwanda gorilla permits in 2026: price tiers and booking source

A dated guide to checking Rwanda gorilla permit categories, residency evidence and availability with the Rwanda Development Board.

Verified Aug 2026

Buy a Rwanda gorilla permit only after matching the traveller to the correct Rwanda Development Board category and confirming availability for the intended date. The public booking portal is the source for the price and conditions. An operator quote is not the authority's fee schedule.

The portal displayed several citizenship and residence categories when checked on 12 August 2026. Promotional wording and date limits have changed before, so this article does not turn the table into a permanent promise.

The decision in four checks

  1. Open the Rwanda Development Board mountain gorilla tracking page.
  2. Select the category the traveller can document.
  3. Confirm availability and price for the exact date.
  4. Read cancellation, rescheduling and participation terms before payment.

Do this before non-refundable flights and accommodation. A permit is limited inventory tied to a date.

Category evidence matters

RDB distinguishes categories such as foreign non-resident, Rwandan or East African citizen, and qualifying residents. The portal states evidence rules for residence-based categories.

Do not select a lower rate because the traveller lives in Africa without checking the authority's definition and required period of residence. Carry the document used to qualify.

If the status is unclear, ask RDB before payment. A reseller's assurance does not bind the park authority at briefing.

Read promotional dates literally

The booking page can display promotional rates with excluded periods or package conditions. Record the date range and any linked park requirement.

A promotion visible in an old screenshot may no longer apply. Check the live date and selected category.

When an operator quotes a discounted permit, ask for the authority basis and what happens if the traveller does not meet it.

Permit cost is not trip cost

Add transport to Volcanoes National Park, the night before briefing, accommodation, meals and any operator service. Keep the permit as its own line.

A package can include the permit, but the confirmation should identify it. Ask for the participant name and date held.

Do not describe a transfer estimate as fixed. Road conditions and the starting point affect it.

Build the route around briefing

Sleep near enough to reach the official reporting point without an international arrival or border crossing that morning.

Keep the rest of the trek day free. Trail length, weather and group assignment vary. No seller can promise an exact finish time or sighting conditions.

Use the next day as recovery or a modest transfer. Protect the permit from a brittle sequence.

Check participation rules

Read RDB's current age and health rules and the ranger instructions. Gorilla health protection can require an unwell visitor to stay back.

Discuss mobility or fitness concerns before purchase. Ask about porter arrangements and equipment guidance through the authority or licensed operator.

A permit is permission to participate under the rules. It is not a guarantee of a particular gorilla family, trail length or photograph.

Booking direct or through an operator

Direct booking keeps the authority transaction visible. An operator can coordinate the permit with transport and accommodation.

In either case, obtain official confirmation. Verify the spelling against the passport and read the package cancellation terms separately from the permit terms.

Do not send funds to a person who cannot identify the business, permit process and written conditions.

Entry permission is separate

A gorilla permit does not grant entry to Rwanda. Check the passport with Rwanda immigration. The directorate says nationals of all countries can receive a visa on arrival while defined groups receive fee waivers or longer terms.

If the trip also includes Uganda or Kenya, compare the East Africa Tourist Visa with separate rights. Keep the first-entry rule in the route.

Resolve entry documents before travelling to the permit date.

Recheck before departure

Confirm the permit, participant name, reporting location and time with the issuer or operator. Carry the passport used for the booking and offline copies of the confirmation.

Check what clothing and equipment the authority currently recommends. Follow ranger instructions on the day.

The reliable permit price is the one shown by RDB for the traveller's documented category and date. Everything else needs to reconcile with that record.

Keep a permit record containing the authority reference, participant name, date, category, amount, currency, payment recipient and cancellation terms. If an operator collects the money, the package invoice should show whether the permit is already secured or merely requested. Ask when the official confirmation will be supplied.

Card and bank charges are separate from the authority price. Label them separately rather than presenting their sum as the permit fee. If the trip is postponed, obtain written confirmation of any new date before changing flights. A verbal statement that the permit can move is not a rescheduled permit.
