Kenya eTA in 2026: who needs it and what to check

A passport-first check of Kenya's electronic travel authorisation, the official application route and the documents to verify before departure.

Verified Aug 2026

Kenya replaced its visa system for short visits with an electronic travel authorisation, usually shortened to eTA. The useful question is not whether Kenya is "visa-free." It is whether the passport you will carry needs an eTA for this journey.

The Directorate of Immigration Services tells visitors, including children, to obtain approval before travel. The live Kenya eTA portal is where exemptions and application requirements are applied. Check the portal against your passport on the day you prepare the application. Do not rely on an airline blog, an old visa list or the rules that applied to a previous trip.

The decision in one minute

Use this order:

  1. Select the nationality shown on the passport you will present.
  2. Check whether the official portal treats that passport as exempt.
  3. If it does not, complete the eTA through the government portal before departure.
  4. Keep the approval available offline as well as in your email.
  5. Recheck the passport number, names and travel dates before you leave.

An eTA is permission to travel to Kenya. It is not a promise of admission. Border officers make the entry decision, just as they do when a traveller holds a conventional visa.

Start with the passport, not your residence

Residence, departure airport and nationality are different facts. A person living in London on a Kenyan passport does not follow the same path as a British passport holder. Two members of one household may need different paperwork if they carry different passports.

Use the document you intend to show at check-in and at the Kenyan border. If you are a dual national, do not begin an application with one passport and arrive with the other. The passport number forms part of the travel record.

This is also why broad claims such as "Africans no longer need an eTA" are unsafe. Regional exemptions can change, and they may depend on the exact passport or travel document. The portal result is more useful than a continent-level headline.

Children need their own check

The immigration directorate explicitly includes infants and children in its eTA notice. A child appearing in a parent's booking is not automatically covered by the parent's authorisation.

Run the passport check for every traveller. Match each approval to the correct passport number and name. Families should save the documents with clear filenames rather than relying on a single email thread at the airport.

A consent letter, birth record or custody document may also be relevant when a child travels with one parent or another adult. Those are separate from the eTA. Confirm the documents required by the airline and the authorities responsible for the child's departure country.

Use the government application route

The immigration directorate links to etakenya.go.ke. Check the domain before entering passport or card details. Search advertising and unofficial agents can place lookalike application services above the government result.

An agent cannot change the eligibility rule or guarantee entry. At most, an agent enters information that the traveller could enter directly. If you choose assistance, you still need to verify every field because the authorisation is tied to your travel document.

Save the application reference after submission. Keep the email address used for the application accessible during the trip. If the site asks for an upload, use a clear image with all edges visible and no glare across the passport data.

Treat processing time as a minimum, not a flight plan

On 12 August 2026, the Directorate of Immigration page said applications are processed within three working days. That statement is a service target, not a sensible reason to apply three working days before departure.

A rejected photograph, a payment problem, a public holiday or a mismatch in the form can consume the margin. Apply after the core itinerary is stable but early enough to correct a problem without moving a flight. Recheck the current wording on the official page because processing guidance can change.

Do not build a connection around an approval that has not arrived. An airline may refuse boarding when the required authorisation is missing, even though the final admission decision belongs to immigration.

Check the approval against the booking

When the approval arrives, compare it with the passport and itinerary. Look at:

  • full name and passport number
  • passport expiry date
  • intended arrival date
  • the email and application reference
  • any conditions printed on the approval

A typing error that looks minor at home may matter when an airline checks the record. Use the contact details published by the immigration directorate if the approval does not match the application. Do not edit the PDF or assume staff will overlook it.

Arrival still has its own checks

Carry the passport linked to the eTA and evidence for the trip you described. A return or onward booking, accommodation details and proof that you can support the visit are common border checks. The precise request is for the officer to determine.

If your itinerary includes another country before returning to Kenya, confirm that the authorisation and entry permission cover the return. Do not infer multiple-entry rights from the word "electronic." Read the conditions attached to your approval and ask immigration when the route is unclear.

Health documentation is another system. Check current requirements with Kenya's health authorities and the countries through which you transit. An eTA approval does not establish compliance with a vaccination rule.

Recheck before the cancellation window closes

Entry systems change faster than most travel articles. Run the official passport check before buying a non-refundable fare, again when you apply, and once more shortly before departure. Save the page or confirmation used for the decision, together with its date.

The practical rule is simple: use your actual passport on the Kenyan government portal and leave time to resolve a mismatch. Everything else is commentary on that check.
